Places We Call Home: Celebrating Latino Poetry with Emma Trelles

Join us for an afternoon celebrating Latino poetry with Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Emma Trelles (2021-2023). In an intimate, small-group setting, Emma will read and discuss poems from Latino Poetry: The Library of America Anthology, exploring themes such as Ancestry and Identity, First and Second Homes, Voice and Resistance, and more. Emma will also guide participants through a hands-on writing exercise to inspire their own creative expression.

Participants will receive selected poems from the anthology to read prior to the event.

Space is limited to 15 participants. Registration is required.

Emma Trelles is the 9th Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara (2021-23) and a 2023 recipient of an Established Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council. In August 2022, she was named one of 22 Poet Laureate Fellows across the country by the Academy of American Poets. Emma is the daughter of Cuban immigrants and was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Emma’s work has been featured in the Academy of American Poets. Emma is the author of Tropicalia (University of Notre Dame Press), winner of the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize, and the series editor of the Alta California Chapbook Prize, open to Latine writers in the U.S. and published by Gunpowder Press.
