Ever wonder how Wikipedia entries are created? Do you have an interest in local history and writing about Santa Barbara residents who have made an impact in our community? Join SBPL librarians to learn how to share and document local history. We’ll use the library’s local history resources to draft articles and upload them to Wikipedia.


Participants will:
• Create a Wikipedia editor account and become a Wikipedian
• Select, research, and write about a notable Santa Barbara resident (from a list of people compiled by the Library & local historians)
• Learn about the library’s local history resources, research strategies, and how to select trusted resources
• Draft a Wikipedia article on a notable Santa Barbara resident
• Review Wikipedia articles written by participants
• Upload article to Wikipedia


Sunday July 23, 10AM - 12PM, Kick-Off

  • Introduction to Wikipedia
  • Introduction to Library resources, Jace Turner & Paige Sundstrom
  • Assign notable Santa Barbara residents to participants
  • Begin research & gather materials


Sunday July 30, 10AM - 12PM, Review & Upload

  • Review, edit, and finalize Wikipedia articles
  • Upload articles to Wikipedia

This is a two-day event. Participants must be able to attend the Kick-off event on July 23. Program is limited to 20 participants and registration is required.
