Santa Barbara Public Library, in partnership with Santa Barbara Black Culture House, proudly presents Shola Lynch's, Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed. This documentary about the firebrand congresswoman from Bedford-Stuyvesant, the first Black woman to hold a congressional seat, launched an unprecedented campaign to run for President in 1972. Although she lost the Democratic primary to George McGovern (who would then lose to Richard Nixon), Congresswoman Chisholm would demonstrate the power of grassroots politics against the establishment.
A Q&A session with author, Darrell M. McNeill, will follow the screening.
Darrell M. McNeill is a proud native New York Brooklynite. He works principally as a producer, musician, composer, arranger, contractor, promoter, critic, and journalist, a self-described historian and ethnomusicologist. He is director of operations for the Black Rock Coalition (BRC), a grassroots 501c3 advocacy, promotion, and production nonprofit for artists of color who defy the music industry’s stereotypical constructs regarding Black music. He has written one book: a 33 1/3 series book about the album “The Isley Brothers: 3+3.”
