Trail Talks: Conservation Stories Behind Some of Our Favorite Trails with the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County

Have you ever walked along your favorite trail and wondered how it was established? Who were the key players and communities that spearheaded movements to ensure we have trails in our county? What are the “conservation stories” behind some of these beloved places?

In this presentation, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County’s Land Programs Coordinator, Carlo Calderon, and Volunteer Coordinator, Vanessa Brooks, will discuss some of the conservation efforts the Land Trust has led to ensure access to open space and trails. Some of the properties we'll highlight include: Coronado Butterfly Preserve, Arroyo Hondo Preserve, Carpinteria Bluffs, Midland School, Hot Springs Canyon, and more!

About the speakers

Vanessa received her bachelor's degree in social services from Azusa Pacific University and has worked in the non-profit sector for nearly 15 years. Throughout her career, Vanessa's passion in non-profit work has remained the same: partnering with local communities to make a sustainable and positive impact. Vanessa’s love of nature and the outdoors inspires her work in preserving the beauty of Santa Barbara County.

Originally from Imperial County, Carlo has been in Santa Barbara since 2014, when he began his studies at UC Santa Barbara. After receiving his B.S. in Environmental Science, he began his career as a restoration ecologist at UC Santa Barbara, helping restore native habitat throughout Santa Barbara. He now uses his ecology and outdoor education background to design and implement public programs at the Land Trust as a way to engage with and connect communities to the outdoors.

The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County is a 501(c)(3) organization focused on conserving natural resources, agricultural land, and open spaces for the benefit of present and future generations. Since 1985, we have permanently preserved 58,063 acres, and counting! The Land Trust offers a number of free, guided public hikes, volunteer opportunities, and other outdoor experiences around Santa Barbara county to connect you with the outdoors.
